Yes you can set up email notifications. When you have managing rights on a document you have a manage tab on the document. In this manage tab, you can find a sub tab called “alerts” in which you can set email alerts for any users or groups and even yourself. See the screen-shot below.

The feature to batch notifications is not available yet but is on the roadmap.
