When have we got to use coreSession.save()?

Hi, In Nuxeo University, course “Nuxeo Platform Developer Basics”, video “Manipulating Documents Part 1: Creation and Retrieval”, the narrator tells us that we will only have to use coreSession.save() on unit tests, because everywhere else is called automatically. Is this true? I have used coreSession.save() in some operations and helpers, but without knowing exactly if it is needed, just because I saw it somewhere in Nuxeo code, and I would like to know if it is safe to remove them, or there are some situations (apart from unit tests) where it is needed.

Thank you,
